- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 egg
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 cups finely chopped peeled apples such as braeburn
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup half-and-half or heavy cream
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Steps
- Heat the oven to 350 F and grease a nine-inch square baking pan with cooking oil.
- Beat the brown sugar, one-quarter cup butter, and egg in a large bowl until smooth.
- Stir in the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and apples until combined.
- Spread the batter in the pan and bake for 25 to 28 minutes, until firm in the center.
- Melt the remaining butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, then stir in the granulated sugar, half-and-half, cinnamon, and vanilla.
- Simmer the sauce for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring often, and pour it over the warm cake.
