Apple Upside-Down Cake

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 apples

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 350 F and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Melt the butter in the pan, stir in the brown sugar, and arrange the apple slices over it.
  3. Beat the shortening and sugar until smooth, then beat in the egg and vanilla.
  4. Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt, then add it to the batter with the milk.
  5. Spread the batter over the apples and bake for 40 minutes until firm and the egg is set.
  6. Cool the cake for 10 minutes, then invert it onto a plate.
