Ingredients
- 3 tbsp butter
- 3 onions
- 2 cloves garlic
- 3 sprigs fresh thyme
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp white balsamic vinegar
- 4 french rolls
- 2 cups shredded gruyère or fontina cheese
Steps
- Heat the oven to 400 F.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the sliced onions with sugar, salt, pepper, and thyme for 25 minutes, stirring often.
- Stir in the garlic and vinegar, then cook for 2 minutes and remove the thyme stems.
- Split the four rolls and fill them with the onion mixture and shredded cheese.
- Bake the rolls on a baking sheet for 10 minutes, until the cheese melts and the edges turn golden.
