Ingredients

2 3/4 cups white whole wheat flour
1 tbsp plus 1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
3/4 cup orange juice
2 large eggs
1/2 cup lard
1 tbsp toasted anise seeds
2 cups vegetable oil (optional)

Steps

Mix the flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder, salt, orange juice, eggs, lard, and anise seeds in a large bowl.
Knead the dough for 5 minutes, cover it, and rest it for 15 minutes.
Divide the dough into 14 pieces and roll each piece very thin on a lightly floured surface.
Heat the vegetable oil to 350 F in a deep 10-inch skillet.
Fry the dough pieces one at a time for 1 to 2 minutes per side, until crisp and golden.
Drain the buñuelos on paper towels and coat them with the remaining sugar.
