- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp instant coffee (optional)
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 6 tbsp milk
- 1/2 cup butter
- 6 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 3/4 tsp vanilla extract
Steps
- Heat the oven to 350 F and grease a 10-by-15-inch sheet pan.
- Boil butter, water, and cocoa in a saucepan, then remove from the heat.
- Whisk flour, both sugars, baking soda, salt, and coffee if using, then stir in sour cream, eggs, and vanilla.
- Mix in the warm cocoa mixture, spread the batter in the pan, and bake for 20 to 24 minutes.
- Boil milk, butter, and cocoa in a saucepan, then remove from the heat and stir in powdered sugar and vanilla.
- Spread the warm frosting over the hot cake and cool for 10 minutes.
