100 g butter plus extra for the tin
100 g honey
125 g dark brown demerara sugar
4 tbsp milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
200 g self-raising flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
large pinch of grated nutmeg
large pinch of ground cloves
large pinch of ground allspice
1 egg beaten

Steps

Heat the oven to 350 F and butter a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan.
Warm the butter, honey, brown sugar, and milk in a saucepan until melted, then stir in the vanilla.
Mix the flour, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice in a bowl.
Beat the egg into the warm butter mixture, then stir it into the dry ingredients.
Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until a tester comes out clean.
Cool the loaf in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a rack.
