Ingredients
- 5 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup milk
- 5/8 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 5 large eggs
- 4 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour (optional)
- 8 oz unsalted butter
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp water
- crystalized sugar (optional)
Steps
- Warm the milk until lukewarm, stir in the yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar, and rest for 5 minutes.
- Beat in the remaining sugar, salt, 5 eggs, and flour until a soft dough forms.
- Knead in the butter a little at a time until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 75 minutes, until doubled.
- Shape the dough in a greased 9-by-5-inch loaf pan, cover it, and let it rise for 75 minutes.
- Heat the oven to 350 F, brush the dough with the remaining egg mixed with water, and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Cool the loaf in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a rack and cool completely.
